Life On A Dead Planet

Radio Times

Much as I love watching football, there's nothing like listening to a game on the radio.

This evening the penultimate game of the Scottish Premiership it taking place. Hearts can become champions for the first time in 66 years, and the first team outside of the Old Firm to win the league since 1985, if Celtic lose away at Motherwell.

At the time of me writing this Hearts are 2-0 up against Falkirk, while Celtic just equalized against Motherwell. If it stays this way then it'll come down to the last game of the season when Hearts travel to Celtic Park in a winner-takes-all game.

I'll be listening to that on the radio too.

Years ago I used to listen to American Football on the Armed Forces Network. This would have been around 1983, and the gentle fading in and out of the commentary on games from exotic - to me anyway - places like Cleveland, Oakland, and Chicago was a wonderful experience on a Sunday evening. Not being able to see what was happening meant having to use your imagination to 'see' the game.

To see what I mean, on the Internet Archive you can listen to classic baseball games, like this one, the Mets taking on the Reds in June 1963 (the Reds won 11-5).

Give it a go - it's a lot different to watching a live game on the telly, or internet.
