Rotterdam
Another Sunday and with nothing better to do I head off with K. to the Dutch Photo Museum in Rotterdam. A nice drive down in glorious weather, an hour later finds us in the queue. We get in for free with out Vriendenlotterij VIP (no less!) passes and make our way towards the first of three floors. The first floor is an overview of some important Dutch photographs from years gone by, although somewhat confusingly there’s also pictures from non-Dutch photographers and/or subjects. Also on display is a history of photography generally, together with some vintage cameras (including a rather nice Leica M5 and one of those yokes with the bellows on it).
Upstairs there’s a sample of the enormous collections of photographs they’ve got in the archives, as well as a film about the life and works of Ed van den Elsken the superb Dutch photographer. On the third floor we found a history of Rotterdam through photography.
It’s a great museum, but like all museums, just a bit too long for me. There’s a lot of wandering around the various displays, and really there’s no real clear path through it all. I always get the impression I’ve missed half the stuff on show. My ideal museum would basically be one long corridor, at max 3km in length where all the stuff you need to see is hung on the wall. You just walk through from one end to the other; this way you won’t miss anything.
On the way back to the car I took some photographs, and then we headed home. Made dinner, and spent some time updating my lists on All Music, IMDB, and Letterboxd. We finished Dark Winds yesterday (a bit of shit ending, tbh) and now need to find something else to watch.
Any suggestions?
Tomorrow should be a quiet day at work, apart from my end-of-year review, which is always exciting. I’ll let you know how that goes!
That’s all for now. Off you go! 👋🏻👋🏻
